Starvation Mode

Starvation mode produces changes in your metabolism, hormonal productions, and psychological systems. Theses changes consist of decreased metabolism, loss of muscle, increasing the fat storing enzymes & hormones and reducing the fat burning enzymes & hormones. Also it will cause your body to decrease the thyroid output, increase your appetite, decreases your energy levels, and affect your mind responses.

Starvation mode is initialized when your total caloric intake is cut to less than 50% of what your body requires each day.

Your body responds by using its own reserves of energy and these reserves are not just your body’s extra fat. First, glycogen (the storage of carbohydrates in the body), stores are broken down for energy. Because there is a small amount of glycogen available, this energy source is depleted during the first hours of starvation. When glycogen is used, water is released which is noticed as a drop in weight on the scale. These glycogen stores are quickly replenished when normal eating is resumed, resulting in the increase of weight.

Your beginning weight when going onto a starvation diet will dictate to what extent fat is lost. If you are not obese (Body Mass Index (BMI) < 30) you will tend to lose your lean body mass more easily and quickly than if you are obese (BMI > 30). If you are small, (BMI < 20) then you have a high risk to also lose lean mass from organs such as your heart.

For a more detail and clinical description, go to wikipedia and search for gluconeogenesis. This will explain how your body produces glucose from other sources that are not in your diet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gluconeogenesis

Then search for beta oxidation. This will explain the detailed process of fat breakdown for production! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beta_oxidation

The common problem with starvation diets is the resultant weight regain. Because most individuals return to the same old habits, they regain their weight they lost plus a little more that is stored for the next time the body goes into starvation mode. What they don’t see when they return to the scale is that the regain weight is fat, the lean mass loss is replaced with fat. When fat replaces the muscle mass that was lost during starvation, the metabolic rate (the number of calories needed to maintain the current weight) is decreased as well.

Recommendations

We do not recommend most of the popular diets currently in the market because they are Very Low Calorie Diets, which results in a starvation mode response.

We do however recommend a permanent solution of a healthy weight loss and lifestyle. It’s called Burn the Fat, Feed The Muscle

This plan allows individual control because we all do not respond the same to the same nutritional sources. Also the reduction in caloric intake is minimal then increases as your metabolism increases. You will also gain more lean muscle, decreasing the fat storing enzymes & hormones, thyroid output, and increase the fat burning enzymes & hormones.

You can read a response from the author of the Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle on starvation mode on his blog at Is starvation mode a myth? – No! It’s very real and here is the proof.
